Dru-Zod was trapped in the Phantom Zone for 40 years by Jor-El after trying to overthrow Krypton prior to it's destruction. After escaping the Phantom Zone and discovering the son of Jor-El, Kal-El, Zod sought to destroy him and became a common foe of Superman.
